How to Deal with Stress in Your Life

In this new podcast, Dudley discusses the topic of dealing with stress. Everyone experiences stress. Do you also know that stress can be very contagious? Have you ever noticed that when you’re with people who are calm and relaxed, you tend to be more calm and relaxed yourself? The same principle is true when you’re with people who are stressed out and wound up. You tend to absorb their stress.

We also know stress can cause serious illnesses. It can also weaken your immune system. With this latest pandemic and worldwide quarantine, many of us are feeling a lot of pressure and abnormal stress. Some may be out of work and feeling financial stress. Others may be trying to work from home and take care of families in a crowded environment. People are getting on each other’s nerves. Some may feel ready to explode. Many are worried about getting sick with the virus or losing a family member. Imagine the effects of parental stress on their children. Young kids don’t necessarily understand what’s happening in the world, but they do feel the stress (or peace) of the adults around them.

There are all kinds of stressors — but here’s something interesting. Two people can experience the same exact situation and have a different reaction. It might have to do with family background. It might have to do with spiritual work they have done or not done. But this fact does indicate that it’s not the stress itself that is causing the problem. It is our individual reaction to stress that can negatively affect us. We hope you enjoy this new episode.

Dudley Evenson on Meditating & Breathing with Nature

In this podcast Dudley Evenson discusses how to best meditate and breathe with nature. Why meditate in nature? There are many benefits of meditation in nature. It has been widely proven that meditating outdoors can have significant benefits on your physical as well as mental health. It’s a place where wisdom and perception come alive.

Meditating outdoors activates our senses, making our practice more alert and wakeful. At the same time, the usual distractions seem far away and somehow less important. Many meditators find it easier to let go of their worries and their electronic devices when they’ve got such a satisfying alternative: mindfully communing with nature. We hope you enjoy this episode.

Making sense of Dalai Lama’s Teaching on Overcoming Addictions & Aversions Using the Blade Wheel of Transformation

At a teaching by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet, he brought ancient Buddhist wisdom into 21st century practical application when he described the Sharp Weapon Blade Wheel of Transformation. He explained that by taking our addictions (desires, wants, cravings, indulgences, etc.) and our aversions (fears, anger, enemies, frustrations, suffering, etc.) we can use their antidotes to overcome them. From his perspective, the antidote to addiction is meditation and emptiness. The antidote to aversion is compassion and love. He pointed out that the best place to begin is with transformation of the heart. This can also be accomplished by putting “others before self.” With so much fear and divisiveness in the world, these ideas are extremely relevant to us today.

Baba Ram Dass, 1976 Lecture

This podcast features a rare, previously unreleased lecture by Baba Ram Dass we recorded in 1976.  Dean Evenson and I videotaped him while we were working with Grassroots TV, the Aspen public access station.  Alongside the podcast, we present the entire video of the lecture on our new Soundings Mindful Media YouTube channel. We hope you will check out the channel and subscribe for more meaningful content coming soon.

With the passing of Baba Ram Dass (aka Richard Albert), we honor his legacy by sharing this lecture that we recently uncovered in our vast video archive. Like so many in our generation, Dean and I were deeply inspired by his book Be Here Now and the stories of meditating with his guru in India. Ram Dass is also part of the reason we started our music label Soundings of the Planet in 1979. Thanks for subscribing to Soundings Mindful Media and for sharing the podcast and video with your friends. May his wit and wisdom live on in our hearts. People who wish to support his memory can donate to his Love Serve Remember Foundation.

Interview with Harpist d’Rachael

This podcast features an interview with our friend and longtime musical collaborator d’Rachael (aka Diane Rachael). Dean Evenson and I met d’Rachael in the early years of creating of our record label Soundings of the Planet. She was already an accomplished musician and when she added the gentle tones of her harp to Dean’s flute, it helped give birth to the inspired and magical sound that spawned a generation of peaceful earth music. Even though she has lived in Mexico for almost 40 years, d’Rachael and Dean have maintained their unique collaboration on numerous recordings and live concerts. Recently, they completed recording a wonderful new album called Tropical Relaxation set for release November 15th.  Hope you enjoy learning more about d’Rachael.

Interview with guitar virtuoso Scott Huckabay

Scott Huckabay is a trance guitarist and musical shaman who draws from nature and his Apache Chiricahua roots to create transcendent experiences. His music has been called a cross between Jim Hendrix, Michael Hedges and Ravi Shankar. After a near fatal motorcycle accident, Scott picked up an acoustic guitar and a new kind of healing music began to flow through him. In this interview, he shares stories of his native background and about his mother being taken from her family and sent off to an Indian boarding school where she was tortured for just speaking her native language. Scott carries the fire of his tribal roots through his energetic and uplifting guitar performances and recordings.
